Step 1
Explore with the dog. A new dog is often fearful of his surroundings. Allow the dog to wander around the home. Walk along with the dog as he pokes his head into closets, sniffs shoes and begins to understand his new home.

Introduce the family. Let the dog meet each member of the family. Allow her to sniff and even lick each person she meets. If possible, allow every family member time alone with her to have some private bonding time. Remember to approach the dog with caution and in a non-threatening way.

Share your smell. Dogs learn through smell. Allow your new dog to sleep with you or at least in the same room as you. This reassures him that he is safe even at night when no one is active, and makes bonding easier. If you do not want to share your bed with a dog, share a shirt. Put a shirt that you have worn, but not washed, on the dog's bed.

Step 4
Show affection. Creating a bond requires communication between person and dog. Hugging, petting and grooming are all physical ways of communicating affection to your dog. When you talk to your dog, use a pleasant tone of voice. The dog will view this as affection as well.

Step 5
Spend time together. If you can, take your new dog with you to do your daily activities. If not, make sure that you plan activities to do together. Common activities include attending an obedience class, playing fetch and walking her. The more time you spend with your new dog, the quicker you will bond with her.
