American citizens with a political party affiliation are typically either Republicans or Democrats. Once you decide you believe most of what Republicans do, you can call yourself a Republican. But saying you are a Republican and being one are two different things. Learn how to be a Republican by following these steps.

Register to vote as a Republican. Whether you are registering to vote for the first time or you want to change your political party affiliation to Republican, contact your state elections office to fill out a voter registration form.

Take a stand on issues that echo Republican ideology. Republicans favor a smaller government, capital punishment and gun-ownership rights. They oppose abortion and same-sex marriages. Keep apprised of current events, and when discussing issues, take the Republican side.

Learn about Republican leaders and the party platform. At the national, state and local levels, there are Republicans who hold public offices, and there are leaders of the Republican National Committee whose responsibility it is to promote the party platform. The party platform outlines the Republican vision and agenda for future political actions.

Support Republican candidates for public office. At election time, vote for the Republican candidates. Attend campaign rallies in support of Republicans and volunteer to work on a Republican campaign. Donate money to Republican campaigns and causes.
