How to Be a Democrat
Deciding between the two major U.S. political parties, Democrat and Republican, is a matter of how your personal beliefs match with each party's political beliefs. 1
Contact your state elections office to register to vote as a Democrat. Whether you are registering to vote for the first time or simply want to change your political party affiliation, a voter registration form must be completed and submitted to the appropriate state elections office.
-
2
Claim the Democratic ideology as your own. Democrats favor labor unions, gun control, progressive income taxes, affirmative action and stem-cell research using federal funds. They are typically pro-choice on the abortion issue.
-
-
3
Educate yourself on Democratic leaders and the party platform. In addition to Democrats serving in public office, there are also key players on the Democratic National Committee. These leaders oversee the design of the party platform. The platform outlines Democratic beliefs and is updated every 4 years.
-
4
Vote for Democratic candidates in elections and support their campaigns. Volunteer to work for a campaign or donate money to the candidates' campaigns. Attend political events in support of Democratic candidates.
-
5
Show your support of the Democratic Party by displaying the party's official symbol, the donkey. Wear a donkey pin on your shirt or put a donkey bumper sticker on your car.
