How to Avoid Teen Pregnancy

Handling pregnancy and parenthood at an early age takes its toll on the emotional, physical and financial well-being of a teenager. Even though studies have shown that the teen pregnancy rate has reduced considerably over the years, it is never too late to talk to your child about avoiding early pregnancy and its consequences.

1. Start to speak to your child at an early age on a frequent basis about self-respect, love, sex and relationships. Choose conversations appropriate for their age and comfort level. Communicating about sex is an ongoing conversation throughout adolescence.
2. Try not to corner your child with one-sided questions, but make it a two-way conversation. Correct any misconceptions that she may have sensitively without ridiculing. Discuss the effects of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
3. Be specific while talking about contraception and disease prevention. Asking a hormonally charged teenager not to have sex does not help. Be realistic and discuss everything from being ready emotionally to using effective contraception.
4. Use real-life stories to show the teenager why parenthood at an early age is difficult. Exercise practical drills for your teenager like babysitting to help her understand the responsibility.
5. Play an active role in knowing your teenage son's friends and girlfriends. Supervise his activities with rules, curfews and expectations.
6. Encourage your teenagers in healthy practices like reading and sports. Reward their achievements and help them plan a smart future with meaningful goals.
