Find Employment at a Golf Course

You don't have to be able to stripe it 270 down the middle to work at a golf course. All that is required is a little knowledge about the game and a strong work ethic. Follow these steps to land a job on the links.

Instructions

    • 1

Realize that a golf course has different areas that offer employment. Each course will have a slightly different breakdown of employment designations, with larger operations like destination resorts having the largest and small municipal courses the smallest.

    • 2

Seek employment directly involved with the game of golf at a course's pro shop.

    • 3

Use prior experience to get higher end jobs such as sales clerk or phone clerk and scheduler. Use prior specific experience to get jobs like course rangers and starters.

    • 4

Apply for a lower level job if you lack experience. These jobs would include bag handlers, cart boys, and range personnel.

    • 5

Check on a course's use of caddies. Check at a pro shop or if one exists, a caddie shack-yes, they do exist. Resort courses almost always have positions open for experienced caddies. Some resort courses are now requiring the use of a "foursome caddie" or fore-caddie. This caddie follows a foursome even though the foursome is in carts. The caddie spots balls, moves ahead on blind holes and generally directs the foursome around the course-sometimes reading putts if asked.

    • 6

Check on a caddie program at local country clubs. Some courses are once again sponsoring teaching programs for younger caddies. Once through the program, these caddies are then eligible to carry for the club's members.

    • 7

Check for work on the grounds crew at the office of the course superintendent. This work is physically more taxing, but for anyone interested in a career in golf course agronomy, it is an entryway to the profession.

    • 8

Expect the work to be seasonal unless at a year around resort. Without experience, expect to start at minimum wage or just higher. But you are working at a golf course.

Tips & Warnings

  • While it may be an overused generalization, golfers tend to be conservative. When applying for a job, being neatly attired and demonstrating a degree of social grace is helpful.
