Catholic men with the desire to pursue a vocation that don't allow you to marry have three options. They can 1) Join the diocesan priesthood, 2) Live a life of poverty, chastity and obedience as a brother or 3) Join an order of priests. The third blends the first two: A man joins a community of priests united in their three vows. Priests in religious orders are obedient to their superior instead of the local bishop. If you're interested in becoming a priest, follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Choosing an Order

Step1
Prepare for a vocation to the priesthood by living a prayerful, Catholic life.
Step2
Visit the sacraments frequently.
Step3
Get information about orders of priests if you regularly feel God calling you to that life.
Step4
Confirm that you meet the requirements. Your priest will give you details on these requirements.
Step5
Learn more about the spirituality of different orders.
Step6
Continue discerning God's will for your life through a more intense routine of daily prayer.
Step7
Find a spiritual director who can help you through the discernment process.

Formation

Step1
Make an initial decision to pursue a vocation with a particular order.
Step2
Apply for admission to the order's formation program.
Step3
Seek confirmation of your decision continuously.
Step4
Become a postulant. Once you are accepted into a formation you will start your training with a basic introduction. This usually includes moving in with the community you hope to join.
Step5
Begin the novitiate. During your time as a novice you will receive intense training in the spirituality, rules, schedule and mission of the order.

Preparation for Priesthood

Step1
Take your temporary vows. This makes you a brother in the order for one to three years. In some orders you take temporary vows multiple times. At the end of each period of temporary vows you prayerfully evaluate your relationship with the order.
Step2
Study for the priesthood. During your temporary vows your education and spiritual preparation continues in the seminary.
Step3
Gain full membership in the community by taking perpetual vows. This usually occurs near the time of your ordination as deacon.
Step4
Receive your ordination to the priesthood after a year as a deacon.
