Ferns are a diverse collection of plants reproducing through spores instead of seeds. Although there are over 20,000 species of ferns, many of which are grown as houseplants, their care is similar. They are easy plants to keep alive, but need care to thrive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the fern in a bright window covered by a transparent curtain or in a low light situation such as away from a south or east window or in front of a west or north window. In the wild, ferns grow in or under trees and therefore tolerate heavy shade.

  2. Step 2

Turn the plant every two days because the fronds,(green strands) move toward the light quickly. This will ensure your fern keeps a round shape.

  3. Step 3

Water heavily until the potting mix becomes entirely moist. Let the top of the potting mix dry out, and then water again. Because ferns lose moisture out of their fronds, they dry out quicker than most houseplants. They also prefer tepid water.

  4. Step 4

Fertilize a fern with a fertilizer high in nitrogen to keep the foliage dark green and attractive. Look for a series of three numbers on the fertilizer package, such as 15-5-5. Nitrogen is the first number and the fertilizer you choose must have a high first number.

  5. Step 5

Mist the plant with tepid water to increase the humidity. Because water droplets sitting on the fronds may harm them, use a fine mist and spray the plant from several feet away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the package of any pesticides used on a fern carefully. Some pesticides will kill ferns. As an alternative, use a slightly soapy water solution to combat pests.
