The Aphelandra, commonly called the Zebra plant, takes its name from its zebra-like white stripes sharply contrasting its dark green leaves. The Zebra also produces bright yellow flowers. Place zebra plants in the moderate light of a west or an east window. The plant does not tolerate direct sunlight well, so it is best to filter its light with a transparent curtain. If you cannot filter the light, you must move the plant a few feet back from the window.

Provide zebra plants a warm, humid environment until flowering is done. Zebra plants must be kept in environments above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the plants on a tray of pebbles to increase the humidity for them. When the plant is done flowering, give it a cooler environment for a couple of months.

Keep the potting mix moist by watering frequently. If grown in front of a west or east window a Zebra plant will need water once per week. However, after the plant flowers, cut back water for a few months by allowing the potting mix to mostly dry out in between waterings.

Cut back the foliage of the zebra plant down to three or four healthy leaves after it is done flowering if you want the plant to flower again. The plant will branch and may regenerate flowers. After the post-flowering rest period, resume normal care for of the plant.
