How to Enjoy Reggaeton

The Latin music genre called Reggaeton is experiencing a boom in many nations. As Latino culture is exported, so are the unique sounds of Reggaeton. As the music is meant to be played loudly, those living with its fans may have no choice but to enjoy it. But, although to some it is a harsh, irritating sound, the joy of Reggaeton is accessible to everyone who will open their ears.

1. Learn Spanish. Reggaeton lyrics are often in the Spanish language, with lively bits of regional (Puerto Rican or Mexican) dialect thrown in. Knowing the language adds to the enjoyment of Reggaeton.

2. Get used to the percussive aspects of Reggaeton. Some common percussive sounds in the genre are similar to the sounds of rapid gunfire or sharp toned drums in quick, sequential rhythms. You can identify these as underlying elements of the Reggaeton style and expect them to be included in Reggaeton compositions.

3. Listen to the melodies woven into the heavy beats of the music. Often with an electronic tinge, these repeating note patterns are as enjoyable as they are complex. Rising and falling scales are thrown into the background to accentuate the power of Reaggaeton's danceable beats.

4. Purchase a selection of Reggaeton albums to sample all of the various styles of artists who practice the genre.

5. Get an adequate system. Reggaeton is best played on a wide register sound system with surround sound or strong bass speakers and a good clear treble. Playing reggaeton on a low spectrum sound system will diminish its clarity.
