Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make sure the person is in a comfortable position. This is both for physical comfort and to make sure she doesn't choke while eating. The adult needs to be positioned at a 45 to 90 degree angle while you spoon-feed.
Step2
Place something under the person's chin to protect his clothing before you start to feed him. Some type of hand towel, handkerchief or folded napkin will do fine. Make sure the protection is thick enough to prevent food juices from seeping through.
Step3
Establish eye contact if the person is alert and responsive. It is very important to maintain the adult's dignity while she is being spoon-fed. Talk to her throughout the meal. Even if she is not responsive, a gentle voice is comforting and encouraging.
Step4
Ask the adult which food on their plate they would prefer to eat first, if he is able to respond. Again, be careful to preserve the dignity of the person. Give him a chance to participate as much as possible while you spoon-feed.
Step5
Use a napkin and wipe the person's mouth between bites when you spoon-feed. It is never pleasant to have food dripping down your chin or the corners of your mouth.
Step6
Take your time while you are spoon-feeding an adult. Never seem rushed. Show respect for the person at all times. Chat with her, even if she cannot respond.
Step7
Realize that if a non-responsive person doesn't open his or her mouth again after a bite, he is finished. Don't try to force more food he wants.
