Every time you hire a new employee you have to spend time training them and teaching them how to operate in your business. Often times this includes increasing their skill level and product knowledge. While employee retention is not always an easy task, you can save yourself time and money by implementing a few things into your business to help you retain your employees. Read on to learn how to encourage employee retention.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Hire good employees. Each person you hire needs to be an asset to the company. You need to consider not only the skills and experiences an employee has, but also how they will fit with your current team of employees. If possible, avoid hiring people who have personality traits the clash with your current employees' personalities. This will be the foundation of having a place where employees want to stay.
Step2
Pay a better wage. Employee retention begins by having a place employees want to work. Determine what wage is standard in your industry for the position of your employees. Once you know this, you can offer a better wage than your competition. When employees know that you pay a better wage than some other business, they want to stay with you.
Step3
Offer incentives. An incentive can be a raise, a stock share plan, a bonus plan, offering benefits or even providing education. Evaluate your industry to determine which incentives you can offer that will encourage employee retention. Employees want to stay with you when they know that they will be rewarded for their loyalty.
Step4
Establish a feedback forum. People will work for you longer if they feel that they make a difference. An opportunity to have their voices heard makes employees feel like they have value to the company.
Step5
Plan an employee appreciation day. Set up parties, picnics or an event to show your appreciation for your employees in a fun way. Invite their family to attend. This is also a great time to reward your employees for their work.
Step6
Say thank you to your employees so they feel valued. A thank you also helps encourage a positive work environment. Your employees feel appreciated when you notice the things that they do. Make this a regular habit and you will be on you way to encouraging employee retention.
