Instead of dressing up and trick-or-treating on Halloween, Independence, Kansas has created a whole new way to celebrate. On the days surrounding Halloween, the citizens of Independence celebrate Neewollah, a 9-day festival with events and entertainment for the whole family.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start things off by watching the Queen Neelah pageant. Here, high school seniors from the area compete for the title of Queen Neelah and the honor of reigning over Neewollah.

  2. Step 2

Be sure to catch all of the parades. Neewollah features three parades each year and they are some of the best to see in the area.

  3. Step 3

Sign up for the bike ride if you're interested in getting your exercise. You'll get a wonderful tour of Southeast Kansas. A 1-mile fun walk or a 5K fun run are also available for those wanting to get some exercise.

  4. Step 4

Plan to spend some time at the carnival. It's packed with rides and games that everyone can enjoy.

  5. Step 5

Don't miss the entertainment. Both local and professional bands perform at Neewollah while local actors perform a different play each year.

  6. Step 6

Visit the arts and crafts show. Here you can purchase all sorts of things from candles and jewelry to woodcarvings and clothing.

  7. Step 7

Participate in the Neewollah Medallion Treasure Hunt. Listen for clues on the radio or get them from the website, then go on an old-fashioned treasure hunt. Prize money is awarded.

  8. Step 8

Decorate a pumpkin and enter the Great Pumpkin Contest. You can paint or carve your pumpkin and compete for prizes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Neewollah is Halloween spelled backwards. The tradition started in 1919 as an alternative to Halloween mischief and today has grown into a nine-day festival.
  • This is a list of some of the things that happen every year at Neewollah, but each year there is something new and exciting. Check the website before you go to ensure you catch all the new attractions.
