Instructions

  1. Comfort the Battered Wife

    • 1

Be a reliable friend. Tell the battered wife about your concerns. Let her know you are there to help her, but that she needs to resolve the issue.

    • 2

Persuade your friend to seek help because lives are at stake. Children living in the house increase the importance of finding a solution. Intervention is needed through a crisis center, police or ultimately a divorce lawyer.

    • 3

Know the domestic family crisis centers for your area. See The National Domestic Violence Hotline website for finding local services. Phone the organization at (800) 799-SAFE. Give your friend this number and keep it for yourself as well.

    • 4

Open up your house in case of emergency. Your friend needs to know she can come to you for temporary shelter.

    • 5

Put aside extra funds to help in a pinch. It is best for the battered wife to hide emergency cash in the event she needs to leave the house.

    • 6

Stay in contact with your friend. Phone her or go to her house if you are unable to get a response. Any concerns should be told to the police if a period of time elapses without contact.

    Confront the Abuser

    • 7

Talk with the abuser about the effects he is having on his wife. Be gentle and avoid heated confrontations.

    • 8

Tell the abuser your feelings about the physical and emotional damage. For a friend or family member try letting the person know you care and outside help is needed to restore the marriage.

    • 9

Explain the legal consequences any illegal behavior.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never remain silent.

  • Avoid being judgmental and harsh.
