How to Know When to Explain Sex to a Child

Some people have very strong opinions about when to talk to children about sex, but unfortunately there's no one right answer. When the time comes, "the talk" can be made a little less awkward for parent and child by following a few simple steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Judge your own readiness to explain sex. Most parents dread talking to their children about sex because they're simply uncomfortable. Readying yourself for an honest discussion is the most beneficial thing you can do in preparation for educating your child.
Step2
Listen for questions. Most children will begin to ask questions at an early age. After all, those conversations about body parts and where babies come from are the beginnings of the sex talk. As your child's inquiries increase, be ready to dole out additional, honest information.
Step3
Capitalize on teachable moments. If you notice a sexually explicit moment on television or know someone who is about to have a baby, take those opportunities to explain facets of sex to your child. Instead of building up to one life-altering discussion, make sex education a gradual process.
Step4
Know your child's friends. If you hear your child's friend say something of a sexual nature, it's an automatic tip-off that your own child is probably learning about sex from someone. If that time comes and you haven't had a discussion with your child about sex, consider it time. When you explain sex to your child, you ensure that she gets accurate information.
Step5
Remain open. By talking to your child about sex, you open the floodgates in a way. By remaining calm, collected and honest about sex, you encourage your child to maintain an open dialogue about the subject. Your child is more likely to come to you for information if you appear comfortable explaining sex.
