Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Friend calendar
  • Friends' addresses
  • Stationary
  • Newspaper comics
  1. Step 1

Commit to maintaining the friendship. Create a "Friend calendar" by keeping track of birthdays, weddings and scheduled conversations with long distance friends.

  2. Step 2

Place phone calls at least once a month to long distance friends. Keep track of the phone calls and try to make it a habit by calling the same time each month. Some cell phone plans such as AT&T offer free minutes to other AT&T customers.

  3. Step 3

Send a written correspondence such as email, letters or cards on a regular basis include family photos to keep friends updated. Keep online and physical address books up-to-date to facilitate this task.

  4. Step 4

Consider round robin letters that are a fun twist where each friend writes an update on their life and then sends it on to another friend to add their life update before sending it on. This can be through regular mail or email.

  5. Step 5

Mail small gifts to long distance friends to help celebrate when unable to attend functions or events such as the birth of a new child. Purchase inexpensive but personal gifts at a dollar store, Dollar Tree or Dollar General.

  6. Step 6

Plan an annual or biannual meeting depending on the distance and financial situations of the friends involved. Try to plan the meeting or trip around the same time each year to make it a tradition, such as an annual Labor Day camping trip.
