1
Purchase a replacement yo-yo string at a department, hobby or toy store or online.
-
2
Remove the old string by pinching the string about two inches above the yo-yo. Then twist the yo-yo counterclockwise to separate the two strands. the string is now is a loop shape. If the string has too many knots in it to do this, you'll have to untie the knots with a paperclip or a needle.

-
3
Slip the yo-yo out of the loop and discard the old string.
-
4
Pinch the new string about 3 inches from the knotted end and separate the string below where you've pinched it with the other hand. Once you've opened it up into a loop, slip the yo-yo inside until the string rests on its axle.
-
5
Keep the end pinched as the string winds back into a twist around the axle, making sure it doesn't knot up as it does so.
-
6
Twist the yo-yo just a bit clockwise to make sure it's tight.
-
7
Wind up the yo-yo and throw it a few times until it throws smoothly.
