Diapering a newborn can be a daunting experience for a new parent. Many new fathers and mothers have never put a diaper on a newborn baby. The important thing to do first is just relax. You can do it. Here's how to diaper a newborn baby.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Diapers
  • Baby wipes
  • Toilet paper
  • Diaper lotion, powder or ointment
  1. Step 1

Have everything within easy reach. It's important to assemble all the necessary supplies and have them all within easy reach to prepare to diaper your newborn baby.

  2. Step 2

Lay the newborn on his back on a padded, waterproof surface. From this point until you are finished, at least one of your hands must remain on the baby at all times for safety.

  3. Step 3

Unfasten the soiled diaper and gently lift the baby's bottom by gently grasping both ankles with one hand. Slip the wet diaper out. If there is a bowel movement, fold the front of the diaper over the dirty part and leave baby's bottom resting on the clean area of the diaper.

  4. Step 4

Wipe the stool from your baby's bottom carefully with toilet tissue. Keep one hand grasping the baby's ankles so his feet will not get messy. When cleaning the diaper area, wipe from front to back with a girl to help prevent infection. Gently slip the diaper out from under the baby.

  5. Step 5

Clean the area well with a baby wipe and slip a clean diaper under the baby's bottom. Most disposable diapers have colorful markings to indicate the front of the diaper. Make sure the back of the diaper is adequately under the baby's bottom.

  6. Step 6

Apply lotion, powder or ointment of choice to the newborn baby's diaper area before closing the diaper.

  7. Step 7

Fasten the new diaper by pulling the front up over the baby's abdomen and opening the tabs and securing to the fastening area of the diaper. Fold the diaper so it does not touch the healing area around the umbilical stump. Some newborn diapers have a dip in this area to keep the diaper safely away from the healing cord.

  8. Step 8

Dispose of the soiled diaper, toilet tissue and wipes by placing them in a covered diaper container. Clean the changing surface and wash your hands.
