How to Dispose of Diapers

One of the first rites of passage for new parents is changing a diaper. While the changing part will soon become second nature, the "disposing of" part isn't quite so simple. Learn how to safely, effectively and neatly dispose of baby diapers in a few easy steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Recycled plastic grocery bags
  • Diaper pail or specialty disposal system

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the diaper. Use the Velcro or sticky sides of a used diaper to create a smaller "package." Simply roll the middle of the diaper into a small ball and secure it using the tabs.

    • 2

Reuse and recycle grocery bags. Keep a stash of recycled grocery bags near your diaper station. You'll want to "double wrap" the especially offensive diapers. Simply place the diaper into the grocery bag and tie a knot in the top.

    • 3

Hide the evidence (and the smell). Place the diaper into a tightly sealed garbage bag or diaper container. You'll have to empty the container depending upon the type you choose. Specialty diaper storage containers with liners will need to be emptied at least once per week. Simple garbage containers should be cleaned and emptied daily.

    • 4

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are numerous brands of containers (like the Diaper Genie) that can also make diaper disposal quick and simple. These containers, however, often require special linings which can be costly.

Most parents don't notice, but ALL diapers (including disposables) require you to shake solids out into the toilet. Check the side of your package. Human feces in landfills can leach out into our groundwater and spread disease. Feces that goes into the toilet gets treated in a sewage plant just like anything else that you flush.
