Podcasting is becoming the new darling of the Internet, replacing blogging as a way for you to be heard. If you don't know what you're doing, the process of creating a Podcast can become a frustrating and often hair-pulling experience. But, with a little knowledge, and the right tools, it can also be rewarding and gratifying.

1
Make sure you have the proper tools at your disposal. These include a decent microphone, MP3 recording software such as Audacity (which is free on the Internet) or the Sound Recorder that comes with Microsoft Windows, a decent script editor or Microsoft Notepad to create RSS files and access to a web server.
-
2
Connect your microphone to your PC, and begin recording using Audacity, the Sound Recorder or other MP3 recording software. Edit your audio file or record it until you're satisfied.
-
3
Check the size of your recording, and write it down. This should be in bytes, which would mean that a size for 4 MB would translate to 4,000,000 bytes.
-
4
Create your RSS feed. Now, this can be done the easy way by using one of many programs available that will create your RSS feed for you, or you can go through all of the tedious steps necessary to create your own using Windows Notebook or another text editor.
-
5
Upload your MP3 and RSS files to your web server using an FTP program or your website creation software. You should then validate your Podcast by going to one of the RSS validators listed below. If it works, you're up and ready for anyone to hear.
-
6
Set up a link on your website directing people to your Podcast or send them a link to the Podcast. You should also have your Podcast listed on as many directories as possible. See the Resources below for a link to a list of directories.
