How to Train for an Adventure Race
An adventure race is a grueling competition which requires much time and effort spent training. Races lasting up to 24 hours require 12 to 16 weeks of training, while races lasting longer than 24 hours require up to a year of training. That is, of course, if you're already in good shape. If not, be prepared to train longer.

Select a race that is at least 12 to 16 weeks away. By knowing which race you plan to participate in and where it is, you will have a better idea of how to train.

Set a personal goal. Determine if you want to take first or if you just want to finish. Beginners should set their sights on merely finishing the race--still not an easy feat.

Recruit teammates. Choose people with similar goals who are at the same fitness level as you.

Start with skills training. You need to be proficient in the following areas before trying to tackle an adventure race: navigation, ropes, whitewater, horseback riding, flat water paddling and ocean paddling.

Add endurance training. For endurance training you need to focus on three areas: mountain biking, paddling and running/hiking. These three areas are guaranteed to be part of your adventure race.

Be sure to give your body some time to rest before the day of the race.

Tips & Warnings
Serious racers, those wanting to compete in multi-day events, should consider hiring a professional trainer. For these long events you will need to spend at least 20 hours a week training, if not more, and a professional trainer can help you train properly.
Skills training can be difficult and take up a good portion of your training. To get a dose of skills training all at once, think about going to an adventure race camp.
Train with your team mates as much as possible. This will ensure your ability to work as a group.
Spend some time each week training with your pack. A properly packed bag can weigh up to 20 pounds and not training with the added weight can be detrimental on race day.
There are three types of adventure races: sprint, adventure and expedition. Sprint races are the shortest and best for beginners. Adventure races are longer and better suited to the advanced adventure racer. Expeditions are for the sophisticated racer as they can last two or more days.
