Things You'll Need:

  • Ornamental windmill
  • Tools (if assembly is required)
  1. Step 1

Find a location to set up your ornamental windmill. Gardens or nice landscaped places in your front or back yard are great places for ornamental windmills. Make sure that your selected location is not shielded from the wind.

  2. Step 2

Choose what kind of material you want your windmill to be made from. There are wooden windmills or metal windmills. Your decision should be based on where you plan to put it and how long you plan to keep it outside.

  3. Step 3

Decide what size of windmill will work for your yard size. Ornamental windmills are most commonly found in 4-feet, 6-feet and 8-feet varieties, but you can find virtually any height you would like.

  4. Step 4

Read the assembly instructions before you buy an ornamental windmill. Select a model that is easy enough for you to assemble by yourself or with the help of a friend or family member.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ornamental windmills do not pump water. They are meant for viewing only.
  • Anchor the ornamental windmill to the ground exactly as the instructions say. It may seem heavy and sturdy, but once the windmill gets moving it can become unstable quickly. It's best to have it anchored to avoid any tipping that could cause injury.
  • If you have kids, you may want to consider a tall windmill (one where they can't stick their hands in the blades) or a wooden windmill (one that won't hurt as much if they do). You may also want to consider making an enclosure for your windmill.
