Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a special place that is far from direct sun. A closet or spare room that has temperature and humidity control is ideal.

    • 2

Place all old records in a vertical, standing position. This prevents what's known as ring wear or groove grind. Always handle the record along the outer rim and the label. Remove the actual record from the jacket and store alongside the jacket to prevent the record from splitting the jacket seam.

    • 3

Make certain that all fingerprints are carefully removed with a soft cloth and a mild window cleaner. Gently wipe the record down working from the center of the record outwards following the grooves.

    • 4

Try to keep a detailed filing list of all old records for easier access and identification. Alphabetically or a numbering system works best.

    • 5

Ensure that all of the old record sleeves have been categorized as acid-free.

    • 6

Store the old records in manageable crates. Heavy, plastic milk crates are ideal to hold around 70 LPs. This will also serve to keep the weight down while transporting or moving.

Tips & Warnings

  • Periodically shuffle the old records to prevent any sticking or ink transfers.

  • Never store old records on 45-degree angles. This causes a condition known as "dishing" that can eventually lead to tonearm "skating."
