Over 4,000 product recalls and recall alerts are available to the public. Often, manufacturers accept back the recalled goods and offer compensation such as refunds, gift cards or replacement items. This information is circulated to keep you and your loved ones safe and free from injury. But how do you find this information? There are a number of websites available to arm your family with knowledge, so jump on to the "information superhighway" and learn how to keep your family healthy and safe.

Log on to the website for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to read about safety and recall information for over 15,000 consumer products. These products range from those for an infant/child, sports & recreation, outdoor products and more. See the Resources section for the CPSC web address.

Click on the link "Recalls and Product Safety News" to learn about recent recalls, recalls organized by date or recalls listed by specific categories.

Stay informed about recent recalls by signing up for product-specific emails. On the CPSC main page, click on the link Sign up for Email Announcements. This link will take you to a page where you provide your email address and zip code. You also indicate what type of email you're interested in: all safety recalls or those by specific category (products used for household, outdoors, specialty products, etc.).

Log on to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website to learn about recalls, market withdrawals, and safety alerts on various medicines, cosmetics, foods and more. See the Resources section for the FDA web address.

Click on the link entitled recalls, product safety on the main page for information about recalls in the past 60 days as well as to learn "what extent of distribution and to what degree of health risk" the recalls pose.

Sign up for FDA recall email alerts by clicking on the appropriate link under "Subscribe to Recall and Alert Information."

Log on to the Consumer Reports website. The address is listed under the additional Resources section of this article.

"Click" on recalls and safety. Along with all the other tested, tried and true product information, the Consumer Reports recall page offers the latest product recalls.

Report a problem by clicking on the report a product safety problem link. That link will take you to an automatic form to complete and submit to Consumer Reports.
