If you're old enough to remember LP records, then you probably have stacks of these 12-inch antiques sitting in your basement, closet or garage. There is a way to preserve these old records that can be a bit time-consuming, but worth the effort.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an interface specifically designed to link a record turntable to your PC. This not only links your turntable to the PC, but also converts the audio signal from analog to digital so you can edit it later.

  2. Step 2

Connect the turntable to the interface using two RCA-type cables. Most turntables only have output jacks, so there shouldn't be any confusion here.

  3. Step 3

Install the audio editing software that came with the interface, and then connect the interface to your computer using either an USB or firewire cable.

  4. Step 4

Record of the record will be in "real time," which means it could take an hour for you to convert each album to a file on your PC.

  5. Step 5

Edit your recording using the audio editing software you installed earlier, and save it to your PC. This will remove any annoying hisses or pops that are fairly common when recording LPs.

  6. Step 6

Transfer the file containing your recording to an audio CD using your favorite CD authoring software.
