Whether it is Memorial Day or the Fourth of July, celebrate patriotic holidays and be thankful and gather with those you love. For those patriotic American holiday gatherings, you need to add to the celebration with a patriotic dessert such as this one that looks like the American flag.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boxed white cake mix
  • Red candies
  • Blue candies
  • 9 x 13-inch baking sheet
  • Vanilla frosting or whipped cream
  1. Step 1

Complete the directions for baking a 9 by 13-inch sheet cake. After baking, allow the cake to cool completely before proceeding to the next step.

  2. Step 2

Spread the white frosting evenly over the cake for a smooth finish on the top and sides. Use homemade or store-purchased icing or you may even use a whipped cream icing if you prefer something light and fluffy. If you prefer more of an eclectic look, spread the icing back and forth, leaving waves in the icing for texture.

  3. Step 3

Take the blue candies and create a square of blue in the upper left corner. Fill the square in with the blue candies, leaving small white spaces to represent the 50 stars in the American flag.

  4. Step 4

Use the red candies to create stripes across the length of the sheet cake, leaving the white icing to represent the white stripes on the flag. There should six white and seven red stripes for 13 stripes, representing the original 13 colonies.

  5. Step 5

Refrigerate the cake if you chose whipped frosting or if you are in a warm environment.

  6. Step 6

Serve the cake at your gathering on its own or with a side of ice cream.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can replace the candies with fresh blueberries, strawberries or raspberries.
