Things You'll Need:

  • Phone numbers of resources mentioned in steps
  • Referral from other parents
  1. Step 1

Check with your local school district to see if they have a list of available English tutors in your area.

  2. Step 2

Contact your local library to see if they offer English tutoring to struggling students.

  3. Step 3

Look for high school students taking advanced placement English who are trying to fulfill volunteer hours. In many districts volunteering in the community is now a graduation requirement.

  4. Step 4

Get in touch with the English Department at local colleges and universities. Many college students are regularly looking for tutoring jobs to supplement their income.

  5. Step 5

Check with other parents who have used tutoring services for a recommendation of a good English tutor.

  6. Step 6

Interview potential candidates and take notice of their use of the language. A person who does not speak well and correctly probably isn't the tutor for you.

  7. Step 7

Make sure that potential tutors have strengths in both grammar and composition. A tutor who is proficient in both will be able to give better help and instruction.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when using High School students for tutoring. Be sure to check with their teachers for a strong recommendation.
  • Do not pay for tutoring sessions in advance. Pay only at the end of each session.
