Painting an outside deck is almost a summer tradition in most American states. As the seasons pass, deck paint feels the brunt of the elements and begins to show signs of distress. Putting a good coat of paint on a deck improves the home's value and serves as a great aesthetic boost to the area. Read on to learn how.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine which paint will best for the project. Any home improvement store, such as Lowe's or Home Depot, can offer invaluable advice on what paints are best. Water-based, clears, semi-transparent and opaque are just a few to consider.

  2. Step 2

Strip as much of the old paint from the deck as possible to ensure that successive coats won't begin to lift and peel from the old surface over time. Power or pressure washing can aid in this process, as will good old elbow grease and a paint scraper.

  3. Step 3

Buy a set of good brushes and rollers to aid in the process. It is best to start the deck painting with a brush at the top of the deck and rails and work down to the deck surface.

  4. Step 4

Find a good paint sprayer system for an even faster application of deck paint. Be sure to place a protective layer of sheeting or other material to areas vulnerable to over spray. Try to paint the deck on a clear day with little wind.

  5. Step 5

Treat the finished, painted deck with a good quality deck sealer for a lasting finish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the weather forecast to ensure a dry period for the deck to dry properly according to the paint manufacturer's specifications.
  • Consider staining the deck instead of painting. Staining and sealing a deck will lead to a longer lasting finish.
  • Always wear protective clothing and eye wear when painting or pressure washing. Care should be taken to prevent chemicals or sealers from over spraying onto sensitive areas.
