Things You'll Need:
- Soft lead pencils
- Erasers
- Background in calculus and linear algebra as they relate to computer science
-
Step 1
Register early. Taking the test early allows plenty of time for your test scores to reach your college or university before any deadline.
-
Step 2
Download the sample test. It is available online and will guide you through your preparation for the GRE Computer Science test.
-
Step 3
Complete the sample test. This will give you a clear picture of which areas you need to review before taking the actual test.
-
Step 4
Join a class or study group. Online and in-person classes are often available to help you prepare for the GRE Computer Science test. Ask your local university for help in finding one.
-
Step 1
Review computer systems and methodology. This makes up about 35 percent of the test. Look at data organization, programming languages and systems.
-
Step 2
Expect about 14 questions on computer organization and architecture. Review processors, memory and communication.
-
Step 3
Study computer theory. This five percent of the GRE Computer Science test will cover language theory, algorithms and program correctness.
-
Step 4
Practice your math. Elementary graph theory and counting arguments will appear on the test as well as number theory, computer arithmetic and linear algebra.
-
Step 5
Remember the test includes a few questions on other topics also. Numerical analysis, artificial intelligence, computer graphics and social issues could be included on the test.
-
Step 1
Sleep well. As far as it is possible, get a good night's sleep the night before the test. Go to bed on time and try to relax.
-
Step 2
Eat a good breakfast. You won't be able to concentrate on the computer science test if your stomach is growling, so give yourself enough time to have a healthy breakfast.
-
Step 3
Leave early. Give yourself enough time to deal with traffic on the way to the testing center.
-
Step 4
Arrive early. Allow time to go through the process at the test center. Your ID will be checked and any personal possessions you bring will have to be left in a locker.
-
Step 5
Take a deep breath. Then do your best work.
