Step 1
Choose an intensely colored gem. You want to look at the color of the ruby and pick a stone that is a deep, vibrant shade of red. These rubies are of higher value than lighter red rubies.
-
Step 2
Ask if the ruby has been treated. Often dyes and coatings are used to hide surface imperfections and bring out the red color of the ruby.
-
Step 3
Find out the origin of the ruby. Rubies are found almost worldwide with Burmese rubies considered the most beautiful.
-
Step 4
Look at the cut and clarity of the ring's gemstone. It is difficult to find perfect cut and clarity in rubies, but you want to find the most asymmetrical piece with the fewest inclusions.
-
Step 5
Pick a band that goes well with the ruby's deep red color. Platinum, white and yellow gold each look attractive holding a ruby stone.
-
Step 6
Ask for an appraisal. When you are ready to make your ruby engagement ring purchase, ask the jeweler to provide a certified appraisal.

on 9/11/2008 I don't understand the warning section. I mean, shouldn't a woman feel luckkkkkkkky that a man just proposed to her? And, she is getting something original. seems like a no brainer.
