Most of us work for a living. Whether by choice or necessity, we spend many hours every week, working for someone else. Choosing to be a good employee affects you, your co-workers, your boss and your family. Developing the skills required to be a good employee is as simple as forming a few good habits.

      Tell the truth. Above everything else, be honest. If you make a mistake, admit it and fix it. Making a habit of being honest is one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself and your career.

      Be on time. Your employer and co-workers will appreciate your reliability and consistent punctuality will show your boss that you can be depended on.

      Keep your workspace tidy. Staying on top of messes saves you time and energy and shows that you are an organized employee.

      Comply with office policies. If you think the rules are unfair, work through the proper channels to change them. In the meantime, follow all of your workplace's rules of conduct.

      Work hard. Although this may seem a little obvious, it is very easy to get used to just sliding by and letting your co-workers carry the load. Diligence at work will be rewarded.

      Remember what your mother taught you. Be patient and polite. These characteristics are becoming increasingly rare and are the hallmarks of a good employee.

      Pitch in. Doing your share of office chores will endear you to your boss and colleagues.
