Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Local kennel clubs, County Extension Services, public school systems and continuing education programs offer dog obedience classes. Private instruction is another option.

Visit the programs that are agreeable to your schedule and location. Observe classes in session. In order for you and your dog to be successful, you must be comfortable with the instructor and the environment.

Choose an instructor who is certified by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) or the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI).

Meet with a private instructor before committing. Inquire about rates and expectations, as well as training methods. Choose a private trainer whose personality works well with yours.
