Dog obedience training requires a commitment of time and energy in and outside of class. Make the most of that investment so that you and your pet succeed at dog school. The first step is committing to a program that works for you and your dog. Follow these steps for dog school and a place at the top of the class.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that you're learning how to train your dog. The instructor gives the proper techniques and outlines expectations.

  2. Step 2

Purchase the specific collar and leash recommended by your instructor. Both are important tools for your success.

  3. Step 3

Attend class faithfully and participate in all the activities. Instructors offer pointers and suggestions to make you a more effective trainer.

  4. Step 4

Practice daily. Dogs respond best to five- or ten-minute sessions two or three times a day.

  5. Step 5

Make the practice sessions fun. Lavish your dog with praise and small treats for a job well done. Keep treats handy, in a small sandwich bag in your pocket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Freeze a hot dog and then slice it into paper-thin rounds for an economical treat to reward your dog each time he performs well.
  • A pinch collar, if recommended by your instructor, is an excellent, effective training tool. Its use is not cruel, and it is much safer than a standard choke collar.
  • Use the training collar only during class and practice sessions. Your dog knows that it's time to get down to business when he wears the training collar.
  • Practice sessions should be enjoyable for you and your dog. Don't work with your dog if you're upset or frustrated. Wait until you're able to refocus.
