Win Employees' Respect

Managers today must get the respect of their employees in order to motivate and retain them. One of the best ways to do this is to show them you respect them as well. While following these steps is not a guarantee, it will move you closer to winning their respect.

Instructions

    • 1

Get to know each one of your employees. Have periodic one-on-one meetings and encourage them to openly discuss what ideas they have, as well as what their career goals are. This gives you insight to help them get to where they want to be, which will by default make them respect you more.

    • 2

Positively reinforce things each employee does well. Do this regularly, but not so much it loses its value. Target initiative each person takes, as well as projects, presentations or other tasks which are well received.

    • 3

Give employees as much control over their work as possible. This allows them a greater sense of pride and responsibility and shows you trust and respect them, which causes them to afford you the same respect.

    • 4

Offer challenging work which shows you know they can accomplish it. Allow them to grow by setting them up to succeed in the positions they wish to move into. Knowing you have faith in them will help them to show you more respect as well.

    • 5

Reward your employees for doing their work well. Obviously, promotions, bonuses and salary increases are one way to do this. In addition, show your appreciation through non-monetary awards such as days off, company merchandise or award certificates.

    • 6

Ask for employee feedback. This includes asking how you can help them, as well as getting feedback on what they think works well and could use improvement in the organization. Make suggested changes when applicable to show you are truly interested in what they are saying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you notice and mention when the employee does things well, instead of only meeting with them when something has gone wrong.
