A home dry-cleaning kit is best for removing odors and freshening garments between trips to the professional cleaners. The kit is most effective on sweaters, velvet, delicate items and dry-clean-only blouses. Here's how to get the most from your home dry-cleaning kit.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look over each garment and treat any spots. Use the dry-cleaning sheet or a separate stain spotter. The dry-cleaning kit works by using heat; heat sets stains, so give each item a thorough going-over

  2. Step 2

Sort garments by fabric weight or type. Dry clean wool and heavier fabrics in one load; group lightweight fabrics like silk and rayon in another. Dry clean both suit garments in the same load.

  3. Step 3

Button and zip all garments. Make sure pockets are empty.

  4. Step 4

Process the bag in the dryer for about 10 minutes, or according to manufacturer's directions. Do not over stuff the bag.

  5. Step 5

Remove items from the dryer bag immediately when the cycle is complete. Hang or fold garments right away to avoid wrinkling.

  6. Step 6

Touch-up trousers and business suits with an iron to smooth the fabric. For a crisp, professional pressing, take the items to the dry cleaners.

Tips & Warnings
  • Each home dry-cleaning kit comes with a perfumed freshener. Check out several kits for a scent that appeals to you.
  • One dry-cleaning kit will clean approximately 16 garments in four loads for about $.50 per garment. Do not overload the dry-cleaning bag.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions. Use the bag provided and don't add any other cleaners.
  • Don't force large items like bedspreads or blankets into the dry-cleaning bag. They will end up hopelessly wrinkled.
  • Don't use the dry-cleaning kit at the laundromat where dryer temperatures are higher and might melt the dry-cleaning bag.
  • Most home dry-cleaning kits are not safe for leather, fur, suede and most types of velvet. Be sure to check the kit's instructions. Items with oil-based stains, lipstick, make-up, butter, grease or a garment covered in pet hair should be professionally cleaned.
