Gracious table manners require that you know how to use a dinner napkin. Though quite innocent looking, a napkin comes with a set of simple rules. If you're familiar with the etiquette of how to use a dinner napkin, you'll not only avoid dinner table gaffes but you'll be quietly noticed for your lovely manners.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your dinner napkin in your lap right after your host has done so. Pick up your napkin by a corner and let it fall open.

  2. Step 2

Gently dab your mouth with the napkin before taking a drink. This prevents crumbs from falling into your glass.

  3. Step 3

Place your napkin to the left of your plate if you leave the table and intend to return. Push your chair in.

  4. Step 4

Cover your mouth with the napkin if you burp. Quietly say "excuse me" but to no one in particular.

  5. Step 5

Pick up the napkin at the center at the end of the meal. Place it loosely on the table near your plate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't tuck your napkin into your shirt collar. The host (or the restaurant) provides a bib if your menu selection requires it. Don't flap or snap the napkin in the air to unfold it.
  • Don't set your napkin on your plate when you leave the table at the end of the meal. Don't use the napkin to wipe your entire face or mop your brow.
  • Don't dip a corner of the napkin into your water glass for a quick clean-up of something dribbled on your tie. Never use your napkin as a handkerchief.
