The spirits of the dead are easier to communicate with than you might think. Ghost hunters use technology to capture evidence of ghosts. But you don't have to invest in expensive equipment or be a seasoned ghost hunter. You can capture ghosts using ordinary recording equipment and following these steps.

From Quick Guide: Ghost Hunting 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape recorder
  • Cassette tape
  • Notebook
  • Pen
  • Flashlight
  • Headphones
  1. Step 1

Assemble your equipment. Use a tape recorder with an external microphone, if possible, and use new, high-quality cassette tapes. Also get a small notebook and a flashlight if you will be in a dark place.

  2. Step 2

Visit a haunted place or a place where you believe ghosts may be, such as a cemetery or a battlefield. Ghosts can be found anywhere, but they are more receptive when you believe they are present.

  3. Step 3

Prepare your equipment. Lay the recorder on the ground, and set it to voice activated if it is a high-quality recorder and has this setting. If your recorder has an external microphone, move it as far away from the recorder as possible.

  4. Step 4

Talk to the ghosts. Assume that they are there, asking things like, "What is your name?" rather than "Is someone there?" Use a positive tone and ask the ghosts to talk loudly so your equipment will pick up their voices.

  5. Step 5

Take notes. You will probably not hear the ghosts while you are there, so take notes about any background sounds you hear. This way, you will be able to distinguish background noises from ghost voices when you play back the tape.

  6. Step 6

Thank the ghosts at the end of your session. This will leave them in better spirits.

  7. Step 7

Play back your recording over headphones and listen for ghost voices. As you play it back, review the notes you took on background noises. When you hear something that you think is a ghost, jot down its location in the tape.

  8. Step 8

Listen carefully to each instance of a potential ghost voice to determine if it is really a ghost or if it is background sound. If you are convinced it is a ghost, transcribe what it seems to be saying.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can't tell if a sound on your tape is a ghost or background noise, it is probably background noise. However, be aware that they sound similar.
  • Return to the same location to talk to any ghosts you successfully recorded. You may be able to establish a relationship with them.
  • Ghosts are more active at night than during the day, so you may have better luck with your recording at night.
  • The ghosts you record are likely to be sad or distressed. Don't attempt to record ghosts if their emotions will disturb you.
