More and more women are choosing to birth their babies with the help of midwives. There are two different kinds of certified midwives: Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives. There are also midwives who practice as lay midwives. Locating a lay midwife for a homebirth can be more challenging to find than Certified Nurse Midwives or Certified Professional Midwives due to state laws.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide where you would like to birth your baby: home, birth center or hospital.

  2. Step 2

Request a list of approved midwives from the hospital or birth center where you plan to birth your baby to be sure that the midwife you select--regardless of whether you choose a Certified Nurse Midwife, a Certified Professional Midwife or a lay midwife--has privileges to practice at that hospital. This step does not apply to homebirths.

  3. Step 3

Contact your healthcare insurance company for a list of participating midwife providers and specific services covered by your health plan.

  4. Step 4

Search the American College of Nurse-Midwives website for a list of contact information for Certified Nurse Midwives practicing in your area. Call the group's toll-free number at (888) 643-9433.

  5. Step 5

Find contact information for Certified Professional Midwives practicing in your area by visiting the North American Registry of Midwives website.

  6. Step 6

Look up contact information for direct entry, or lay, midwives practicing in your area by visiting the Midwives Alliance of North America website.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your local La Leche chapter is another source for finding local midwives.
