Choosing the right dance floor is an important decision. Your ability to dance for years to come depends on your dance floor. You want your floor to uphold years of dancing and you want your body to feel great for years to come. Here are a few guidelines to help you choose the right dance floor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the type of dance that you want to do. Ballet and jazz require a sprung flooring system. Tap or other percussive dance styles need a wood floor.

  2. Step 2

Think about the future of your dance floor. Choose a portable floor if you are leasing or if you want to use your floor for touring. Lay a permanent floor only if you plan on staying in your studio for a long time.

  3. Step 3

Plan out your floor design. Take measurements and consider where you will need ramps. Think about the floor thickness and height of the ceilings when planning.

  4. Step 4

Find out how to maintain your dance floor. Some dance floors use special mop solutions that do not take off the no-slip surface. Follow the care instructions of your floor to increase its life.

  5. Step 5

Order flooring samples. The dance supply companies are willing to send you a sample of the different types of floors you are considering. Order a few different samples so you can choose between them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some companies offer do-it-yourself flooring kits. This may be a great way to save money if you have some construction skills.
  • Don't lay a vinyl floor surface directly over concrete. This does not provide any protection for the dancer's joints.
