Step 1
Clear a spot on the ground for your fire pit and encircle it with rocks. Choose a flat area away from any trees, with plenty of room around it for everyone to pull up a chair.
-
Step 2
Gather firewood. Find several large split logs and a lot of small twigs and branches for kindling.
-
Step 3
Stand three of the split logs on their ends and lean them together to form a tripod. This will allow air to get to the logs and support combustion of the fire.
-
Step 4
Break the kindling twigs into small pieces and put them in the space under the log tripod. Fill the tripod with as much kindling as you can to ensure that the logs catch fire.
-
Step 5
Place a fire starter material such as newspaper, dryer lint, dried grass or a store-bought fire starter stick inside of the kindling.
-
Step 6
Light the fire starter material with a long wooden match or a long lighter. After the starter material catches fire, move back before the kindling gets going--it will burn very hot and fast.
-
Step 7
Enjoy your fire. After the kindling starts burning, the logs will catch fire in just a few minutes.
