Tufts University has four campuses: Boston, Medford/Somerville, and Grafton in Massachusetts and Talloires in France. The liberal arts, undergraduate campus is located in Medford/Somerville and is just five minutes away from downtown Boston by mass transit. Approximately 8,500 students make up the student body of this residential campus. Tufts University consistently ranks in the top 30 national universities, according to "U. S. News & World Report."

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Plan your visit for a weekday while school is in session. Check the Tufts schedule to make sure your visit doesn't coincide with breaks or reading days for finals.
Step2
Schedule your visit in advance. The admissions office will send you the necessary information as well as parking passes. Also, ask for meal passes for yourself and your family. For a nominal cost you can eat in either Dewick-MacPhie or Carmichael Dining Hall.
Step3
Study the campus layout. You'll then know where to park and how to get to the admissions office.
Step4
Bring a portfolio and notebook so you can keep track of information. Prepare any questions you would like answered. Also, bring any paperwork that the admissions office or the financial aid office requests.
Step5
Tour the campus. Your visit at Tufts begins in Bendetson Hall in the admissions office. This portion of the tour lasts approximately one hour. You then go on a one-hour student-led tour. Ask questions throughout your tour, not only of your tour guide but of other Tufts students as well.
Step6
Embark on a self-guided tour. This is the time to see if Tufts is really the right university for you. Visit a class or sit in on a sports practice session or music rehearsal.
Step7
Evaluate your visit. As soon as possible after your visit, write down all the pros and cons that you remember about Tufts University.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit during your junior year or early in your senior year of high school. This allows you enough time to analyze Tufts in time for admissions and acceptance deadlines.
  • Arrive early, if you would like to talk to an admissions counselor or a financial aid advisor before your tour.
  • Pick up a copy of the school's newspaper to get a good feel of daily life at Tufts University.
  • Bring your camera. Pictures will later help you recall your campus experience when it's time to evaluate.
  • Check out Medford/Somerville and Boston as well. If you attend Tufts, you won't be spending all your time in the library.
