Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Today visitors can see the substantial remnants of the monument, erected between approximately 3000BC and 1600BC. The area was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Tourists can get to Stonehenge by train, car or coach. Arranged coach tours are also available. The nearest train station to Stonehenge is Salisbury, far enough away to require a further bus trip or taxi ride. Drivers should head along the A303 and will be able to stop near the site, which can be seen for several miles from the road before arrival.
Step2
English Heritage manages Stonehenge and ensures that "custodians" are available on site to look after Stonehenge and provide tourists with additional information.
Step3
Visitors are unable to enter the centre circle during normal opening hours. However, it is possible to arrange Stone Circle Access visits outside of conventional opening hours by contacting the Stonhenge tourist office.
Step4
Specialist tour guides can be arranged by contacting Wessex Tourist Guides at 01980 623463.
Step5
If you want to stay near the Stonehenge site there is plenty of local accomodation on offer to tourists. Activereservations.com provides good reviews of local bed and breakfasts and hotels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read about the history of Stonehenge before your visit.
  • Plan to arrive as the sun sets for a spectacular view of the World Heritage site.
