The Newcastle Community Green Festival began life in 1995, though unfortunately all records of this first event have apparently disappeared. It's main aim is to provide awareness of environmental issues through music and performing. In fact, last year the festival achieved more than that by becoming powered entirely by renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and bio fuel. But the best thing is that its free and if you're available between June 7 and 8 in 2008, why not take a look.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check out the Newcastle Green Community website (link below).
Step2
Rejoice. This festival is completely free and you will just need some money for food.
Step3
Know what you are coming to see. At the moment the 2008 schedule is not up on the website, but keep an eye out. In 2007, four stages showcased music from punk to jazz, but with a particular emphasis on ethnic sounds. There was also an environmental fair where people could learn how to save energy including a Green Parade through Newcastle.
Step4
Plan how to get there. The festival is situated in Leazes Park right next to St James Park, the Newcastle United football Stadium. For directions go to the AA link below and input the relevant details. There are plenty of spaces to park, but a parking space is unlikely to be free.
Step5
Get there by train. The nearest station is Newcastle Central. Alternatively you can catch a National Express coach to St James Blvd. Both options are only short distance from the park.
Step6
Book accommodation. It is unclear, though likely, whether you can camp in the park and more information will be available closer to the date. For bed and breakfast, hotels and hostels, go to the Tourist Information link below.
