Greyhound racing may seem like a harmless sport, but there are harsh realities that go along with it. Each year tens of thousands of greyhounds are bred, only to have the majority destroyed because they lack racing potential, are injured while racing or are no longer able to race. A racing greyhound’s career is usually over at age three or four--at which time these lovable dogs could sure use a loving home and a second chance. Unfortunately--many don’t get one.

There are ways to help put an end to this cruel sport--and also opportunities to support those dogs the racing industry has left behind. The following tips will get you started.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Don’t attend greyhound tracks or bet on greyhound races.
Step2
Tell anyone you know who patronizes greyhound racing that it’s not a harmless sport and ask them to join you in a boycott.
Step3
If you live in a state that allows greyhound tracks (or has not yet banned greyhound racing), contact your local and state officials via email or a phone call and explain why you are opposed.
Step4
Ask your family and friends to contact their legislators and express their opposition to greyhound racing.
Step5
Look for online petitions to ban greyhound racing and add your signature. There is an ongoing one that you can sign by clicking thepetitionsite.com under Resources below.
Step6
Adopt a retired racing greyhound and encourage people you know who are considering adopting a dog to do the same. Greyhounds make wonderful family pets; all they need is a fenced in yard and the chance to exercise. Greyhound adoption events are held all over, particularly in areas that have tracks. They can also be found at rescues and shelters.
Step7
Donate money or your time to a greyhound protection organization.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more information and statistics on greyhound racing, visit Greyhound Network News, the Greyhound Protection League and The Humane Society of the United States.
  • Revenue from greyhound racing has diminished considerably in recent years due to public awareness. The more the word spreads, the better the chances of an overall ban.
  • Don't confuse amateur greyhound racing (where the dogs have fun, are treated well and not destroyed) with greyhound tracks and parimutuel betting.
