Things You'll Need:
- Mezuzah
- Hammer
- Nails
-
Step 1
Traditionally, a Mezuzah should be attached to the door post of each room in the house except for the entrance to a bathroom. It is more common to find Jewish households in the U.S. only putting them on the front and back doors of their homes. The first thing to do is find Mezuzahs that you like. There are many styles and they can be found on-line or locally at stores specializing in Judaica. The Mezuzah should contain a scroll that has been deemed Kosher - these are often hand written.
-
Step 2
Before attaching the Mezuzah to a door post, the following blessing should be recited:
Hebrew Transliteration: Boruch Atah A-do-nai Elo-heinu Melech Ha-olam asher kidishanu b'miyzvotov v'tzivanu likboa Mezuzah
This translates to: Blessed are You, Wonderous One, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us with the commandments and commanded us to affix a Mezuzah. -
Step 3
If more than one Mezuzah will be hung at the same time, only one blessing is said.
-
Step 4
The Mezuzah is hung on the right door post as one enters. It is slanted with the top pointed to the inside of the room. It should be hung in the upper third of the door post - around shoulder height. Most Mezuzahs are hung with small nails. When fastening it to the door post, use a small hammer, and be careful not to damage the Mezuzah.
