This is a sure-fire way to stay awake and alert when sleep is trying to overtake you. You can use this method not only for driving, but for staying awake in boring meetings at work, pulling all-nighters, reading boring or difficult material, or anything else that would normally put you to sleep.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • chewing gum (1 stick)
  1. Step 1

Realize that your brain has a left-side and a right-side. The left-side of the brain is for technical and detailed activities, like walking, doing chores, typing at the computer, driving a car, etc. The right-side of the brain is for creative activities, like thinking, pondering, love, and sleeping.

  2. Step 2

Remember that the left-side of the brain controls the right-half of the body, and the right-side of the brain controls the body's left-half.

  3. Step 3

Start chewing a stick of gum on the RIGHT side of your mouth, about an hour before you need to be fully alert. This will stimulate the left-side of your brain so that you will be able to be fully and technically competent and alert for such activities as driving, typing, and, especially, staying awake.

  4. Step 4

Continue chewing the gum, on the RIGHT side ONLY, during the entire time that you need to stay awake and alert. Vigorous chewing on the right-side tends to increase the stimulation of the left-half of the brain.

  5. Step 5

When you no longer need to stay awake, stop chewing the gum. You should be able to sleep normally without any side effects.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any type of activity on the right-side of the body will stimulate the left-side of the brain. This could be doodling with your right-hand, drumming your right-hand fingers on a table-top, or tapping your right-foot.
  • Chewing gum can be offensive to many people. Substitute the above right-side activities if you are in a meeting where people might be offended by gum-chewing, or just chew the gum very slowly.

on 7/27/2007 Melody, yeah, if you are always doing things with your left side, you'll be artistic, but not technical. This might explain a lot of what is going on in your life.
