Go Salmon Fishing in Ireland

Ireland is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing and there are many spots situated all over Ireland where you will find the fishing is good. Some people regard catching a salmon as one of the greatest angling experiences.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a salmon fishing holiday. If you are thinking of spending a whole holiday fishing in Ireland, check with your travel agent.

  2. Step 2

Fishing in Ireland holidays will include accommodation and a ghillie who will be able to find the best fishing spots for you. If you are a beginner they will also be able to give you advice on fishing rods, bait, tackle and the local area. The prices for these holidays can range from around £400 to £800 if you are going fully inclusive.

  3. Step 3

Some of the best salmon fishing in Ireland is said to be found in the Shannon region. The Mulcair is thought to be one of the best trout and salmon fishing rivers but the River Moy near Balina is also one of the top rivers for salmon.

  4. Step 4

Try the Erne Estuary, one of Ireland's most important sea trout fisheries; the fishing is best from May to June. You can fish all day at locations such as the Old Castle and Finner Banks; many anglers have been known to catch around 60 fish per day.

  5. Step 5

Hire the services of a ghillie, at least for the first part of your holiday. The ghillie will be able to help you locate the fish and can give you information such as the best times of the day to find them. The ghillie will usually be a local so he will also be able to tell you the best places to buy a pint of Guinness, although as you are in Ireland, that should not be too hard.
