Remember to eat some food beforehand. This is key to how long your pub crawl will last unless you want to be a drunken wreck by closing time. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafes in Liverpool from the Everyman Bistro on Hope Street that opens until 2 a.m., to Kimos on Mount Pleasant, famous for their kebabs. Wait, kebabs, that's for the end of the night.

Decide on your pub crawl. You can have one drink in every pub and then leave, or you can play some elaborate drinking game that will involve a set of rules that will be forgotten by the third pub.

Find the cheap drink pubs. Many pubs will have happy hours and special promotions, the night will be less expensive if you can find these pubs. There's nothing worse that telling a taxi driver to take you to your parent's house as you have no money left to pay him. Check out the City X Blag that will list promotions and details for pubs and clubs in the area.

Liverpool and The Beatles, the two are connected somehow, no? If you are a newcomer to the city, then go to the Cavern Club, that's where the Beatles played...well no, it's not. The old Cavern Club was demolished years ago but the new version in its place still has great bands playing and won't cost you anything to get in until 11 p.m. Check the website at www.cavern-liverpool.co.uk.

It's getting late, time to move on. If you are still in the need of more refreshment, go to Magnet on Hardman Street. Take a taxi if you must but you can walk it. Once you get there slump into a booth, have a few drinks and see if you can manage the stairs down to the funky club. What do you mean you are too drunk, it's only downstairs.

Get a taxi home. Ignore the jeers and ask the barman to call you a taxi; don't try and pick one up on the street.
