Edinburgh is home to numerous pubs and each part of the town has their own distinct pubs. If you are looking to find classic pubs in Edinburgh it may be more advantageous to stick to the Old Town area. The Old Town pubs have histories that date back centuries, but even in the New Town you can find some classic pubs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Take the Edinburgh Literary Tour. This is a fun way to find classic pubs in Edinburgh on a tour around the Old and New town bars. The tour is hosted by professional actors who will take you to scenes of famous Scottish literary figures including Robert Burns. For more information, go to the official website at www.edinburghliterarypubtour.co.uk or call 0131 226 6665.
Step2
The Cafe Royal Circle Bar Go to the Cafe Royal Circle Bar. The Cafe Royal Circle Bar on Register Street may just be the definition of a classic pub. It is situated right next door to the Oyster Bar restaurant and it is a magnificent example of Victorian decor. The huge island bar in the centre of the pub is fantastic just to look at. The food and drink are first class, or you can just sit and stare at the tiled portraits of the inventors.
Step3
Classic pubs, of course, depend on your age. If you have just reached drinking age then your definition of a classic pub may be one where the bar staff do not keep asking you proof of age every time you enter. If you are a youngster, then the Albanach at 197 High street might be to your liking. With its bare stone and wood decor it may seem like the definition of an old fashioned pub, but the place is always filled with a young trendy crowd. Its also popular with tourists who usually find it by accident.
Step4
Go where the writers hang out. Most writers favour unpretentious, quiet pubs. If you are a fan of the Inspector Rebus novels, then head down to the Oxford Bar on Young Street. This is a favourite pub of Rebus writer Ian Rankin. If you are lucky you may find him in here carving his initials into the wooden table tops, or then again maybe not. Word is he loves it when fans approach him when he is deep in thought and ask if Inspector Rebus is real.
