Golowan is Cornwall’s festival to celebrate midsummer. This take place from June 23 to 28 every year, from St. John’s eve to St. Peter’s eve. The celebrations traditionally entail the lighting of bonfires and releasing of fireworks, but the modern equivalent at Penzance now also includes a major arts and cultural festival. Planning a weekend taking part in the celebrations is definitely worthwhile. Here’s how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Arrange your weekend to take in Mazey day and Quay Fair Day. These are known as highlights of the 10-day event.
Step2
Go to www.golowan.org for all you need to know about the festival, including dates.
Step3
Plan how to get to Penzance for the festival. National Express run up to 7 coaches per day from all major UK locations. First Great Western and Virgin Trains also run services to Penzance.
Step4
Book accommodation well in advance. Websites such as www.penzance.co.uk/accommodation are useful to arrange this. Refer also to www.go-cornwall.com for further information on accommodation in the southwest.
Step5
Research in advance all the events taking place, and book your tickets. Not only will you save money due to the advanced ticket concessionary rate, but you will avoid disappointment when the events sell out. Details will be released to the website around the start of each year.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look out for free events taking place throughout the course of the festival.
