Ireland has a highly developed equestrian culture. There are always horse shows or horse races going on somewhere and there’s no better way to appreciate the country’s natural beauty than by seeing it from the back of a pony.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
There are pony riding options all over the country and from the back of a saddle you will certainly have ample opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature--so best decide what suits you in advance. Rugged mountain terrain where your pony will be pushed to its limits, flat pleasant countryside, or sandy beaches where you’ll get to watch incoming waves plash against your pony’s feet?
Step2
Decide how long you want to spend pony riding. Do you intend for it to be part of a larger holiday, or do you want to steep yourself in it full-time? Some places offer casual pony riding options where you can spend just a few hours in the saddle. Others give you a “total immersion” experience where you will spend days, a week or even more living with your pony as a cherished companion.
Step3
Think about how experienced you are and whether you need riding instruction. Some firms offer experienced riders the option of making their own way over several days along the points in a marked-out trail. Places where you can get food and accommodation will be arranged in advance.
Step4
Visit the Equestrian Holidays Ireland website and the Association of Irish Riding Establishments website to see the full range of equestrian experiences which are on offer for your Irish holiday (see Resources). These are great portal sites which link to the websites of the individual firms which can help deliver on the experience you’re looking for.
